Wacken Open Air ( W:O:A)    

Es el festival de heavy metal más grande del mundo. Se realiza cada año, en la ciudad de

Wacken en Schleswig-Holstein, al norte de Alemania. Reuniendo a más de 70000 visitantes cada año, atrae a casi todos los fans de subgéneros del metal.

La primera vez que se realizo este festival, fue en 1990 y solo con bandas alemanas locales.

Sobre el año 1998 el acontecimiento ya se había convertido en el mayor festival de Europa y uno de los más importantes en todo el mundo, reuniendo a más de 70 bandas de Australia, Norteamérica y Europa. Se suele celebrar normalmente a principios del mes de agosto, y tiene una duración de tres días. Los más de 70 artistas tocan en cuatro escenarios separados llamados: True Metal Stage, Black Metal Stage, Party Stage y Headbangers Ballroom Stage o Wet stage.

Actualmente cuenta también con una zona medieval en la que uno puede comer platos de la época o recrearse asistiendo a batallas entre guerreros vikingos.

El festival es  bien conocido por sus altas medidas de seguridad, organización y la baja tasa de incidentes durante el evento.

• 2008--->Del 30 de julio al 2 de agosto: La primera noche de festival más pudo considerarse una fiesta de bienvenida en la que actuaron: Metakilla, Mambo Kurt. En el oficialmente primer día actuaron los cabeza de cartel Iron Maiden, además de Lauren Harris, Airbourne, Avenged Sevenfold, Mustasch, Sturm und Drang, Nashville Pussy, Leaves' Eyes, Concept Insomnia, Negura Bunget, Alestorm. Para el segundo día se guardaron grupos como Children of Bodom, Opeth, Kamelot, Corvus Corax y Avantasia (éste último como cabeza de cartel del día). Se llevará a cabo en agosto 1 a 3 de 2013 en Wacken, Alemanía. 

Si dentro de sus planes para el 2013 estaba asistir al festival de metal más grande del planeta, esos planes tendrán que ser pospuestos.

La organización del Wacken Open Air Festival anunció que las 75,000 entradas para el año entrante ya fueron vendidas en su totalidad,  sólo un mes de haber salido a la venta.  Esta es la octava ocasión (seguida) en la que las entradas para el festival se agotan, sin embargo, este fue el año en el que esto ocurrió en menos tiempo.

Wacken Open Air, que celebró su aniversario # 20 en 2009  recibió el premio Live Entertainment Award en el 2008 en la categoría “Festival del Año”
